Everybody hates waiting at the border crossing in a long line. Luckily Canadian Border Services Agency offers an up to the minute estimate of the wait time at all border crossings (Canadian side). Check it out before leaving home.

US Customs & Border Protection has a counterpart wait time estimate at the US side. Check it out when returning.

Cross Border Shopping Cost Calculator 

Cross border shopping has additional costs, specifically gas and hotel (if you want to qualify for the personal exemptions). To help you factor in the total cost, Global and Mail provides a cross border shopping calculator.  However, the enjoyment of finding a bargain cannot be measured in dollar value.
